The context
Last June, in the Orthodox metropolis of Episkopeio, the largest and most advanced planetarium in Europe was inaugurated. The building is a unique space that allows visitors to explore the night sky while combining education and entertainment.
At the heart of the building lies a dome over 18 meters in diameter, serving as the centerpiece of this incredible project. Thanks to its powerful digital system, it achieves extremely high resolutions. To enhance the sensory experience, spatial audio technology has been installed, creating an immersive soundscape.
The Observatory features a 4-meter robotic dome and is equipped with a 14″/356 mm telescope for night sky observation, as well as a helioscope for daytime viewing of the Sun and its spectacular solar eruptions.
Adjacent to the Observatory, there is an open-air amphitheater, a conference hall for events, presentations, and meetings, a restaurant, and a gift shop.
The project
Based on the client’s specific vision of installing flooring reminiscent of the starry sky, Newfloor proposed Silestone by Cosentino, color Nero Stellar with a glossy finish. Using this covering, over 600 m² of G30HAQ panels were produced: 30 mm-thick calcium sulfate core measuring 60×60 cm, high density, with a bottom layer of aluminum foil and reconstituted stone applied to the top surface.
Additionally, 200 m² of raised access flooring type G30HAK were produced, finished with Casalgrande Padana ceramic, Architecture collection, color White, and Caesar ceramic, Inner collection, color Cliff.
For the Observatory area, 350 m² of G30H00 calcium sulfate panels with primer on both top and bottom were supplied, installed to create stepped platforms, and later covered with self-laying flooring.
For the entire project, a total of 1,200 m² of raised floor structure was provided: type SNFL with a nominal height of 185 mm and light crossbars, and type STFM with a height of 650 mm and medium crossbars.
